Lions and tigers and Elst beers, oh my!
Come see us at the inaugural Brew at the Zoo! We’re bringing the Vanilla Milkshake and our Double IPA for your tasting pleasure.
Vanilla Milkshake Ale – A pale wheat beer with milk sugar and vanilla added to make a thick and creamy treat!
Double IPA – Tipping the scales with double the hops and double the alcohol. This IPA comes in at 125 IBU and 10% ABV!
If you weren’t aware, we are in the middle of Knoxville Craft Beer Week! There are events happening all around town this week and the grand finale will be Knoxville Brewfest on Saturday June 16th at World’s Fair Park. Elst will be participating for the first time and serving samples of some special recipes. These have been turned up a notch or two exclusively for the festival. Here’s whats on the menu!
190 IBU IPA – Hops on Hops on Hops! We almost lost track of the hop additions on this one. Strong citrus aroma and flavor with a crisp bitter finish. A real face melter.
Chile Pepper Ale – A double dose of peppers! American Amber Ale with a healthy dose of roasted green chiles and dried red chiles (a true New Mexican Christmas!) added to the boil to deliver a strong fresh chile aroma, a punch of roasty chile flavor, and a spicy finish.
Milkshake Ale – A pale wheat beer with milk sugar and vanilla added to make a thick and creamy treat!
Abbey Dubbel – The dark and decadent flavor of our traditional Belgian Trappist style Dubbel.
Tickets for Brewfest can be purchased online, but we hear that it sells out every year. Get them while you can!
Some people say… the brewhouse is the heart of the brewery. The Elst brewhouse will be a 10bbl system manufactured by Smart Machine Technologies (SMT). We chose SMT because of their ability to work with us on custom specs for the brewhouse and they are located close by in Ridgeway Virginia. The brewhouse is being manufactured to fit the best layout for our space. Our mash tun will give us the flexibility to mash at different temperatures throughout the mashing process. This is a technique that is used in traditional Belgian brewing and we feel that it is an important feature for the brewhouse.
Our friends at SMT recently shared some photos of the equipment being built. We are excited to see the finished product soon!
Although updates have been absent, we have been diligently working towards opening the brewery. This summer we purchased a building in the 2400 block of North Central! Our progress so far has been mostly demolition and some discovery of the property. One remarkable discovery was that inside our building is a smaller and much older building that is mostly intact! Here are a few photos of the space after demolition.
We are now close to approval of our architectural drawings which will be closely followed by construction. We have also selected a manufacturer for the brewing equipment and began the fabrication process. Stay tuned for more details on the brewhouse!
Hellooooo Knoxville!!! Elst Brewing Company is proud to announce that we are actively working on securing a property on North Central St. in the Oakwood neighborhood. We will start with a tasting room that will serve our favorite beers from around town and around the world. The opening of the tasting room will soon be followed by the opening of our own brewery to share our creations with the Knoxville community. Target opening for the tasting room is Fall 2017 with the brewery opening Winter 2017/2018.
The Elst team is a group of friends and neighbors that all share the same vision for creating world class beer in our home town of Knoxville, TN. We have spent many years crafting recipes, studying brewing, and researching the possibility of opening our own brewery. The opportunity we have been looking for has finally come together and we feel like it is the perfect time to join the growing community of breweries in the Knoxville area.
We love to create all styles of beer! From the subtle flavors of traditional styles to explosive experimental ales, Elst wants to provide an experience with every beer that we make. We believe that every glass we pour is a chance to tell a story.
